We have manufactured manhole covers for petroleum tankers for over 50 years and these features have evolved through our experience and consultation with international oil companies, which nearly all use the EMCO Wheaton design.
Manhole covers are arguably the most important safety component fitted to a vehicle’s tanker. EMCO Wheaton models include emergency venting to prevent tank explosion if a fire occurs (7000m³/hr at 350 mb), as well as a pressure vacuum breather to complete with rollover seal to stop leakages if a tank is overturned. Operators are also kept safe by a two-stage opening mechanism that releases residual pressure before fully opening. This stops dangerous kick-backs.
Our cast option includes blind bolt holes to ensure no liquid cargo can leak through and webs on the underside of the base plate to increase structural integrity. The springs used for the emergency venting are corrosion-proof, assuring correct operation regardless of environment.
Other key features include:
- Raised seal face that prevents water dripping into the tank compartment
- Generous 10-inch (245mm) fill opening for easy insertion of loading arm drop pipe if needed.
- Fill cap with water drainage lip to prevent contamination
- ADR compliant
